The Columbianum
In 1794, Charles Willson Peale organizes the Columbianum, the first society of American artists. They have their first exhibition in 1795, which features paintings by artists who are proponents of Realism. This style dominates early American art, as artists are determined to render America in the years of colonization. The Columbianum Exhibition provides a venue for artists to display their work and for patrons to support the artists.
American Academy of the Fine Arts
In 1802, the American Academy of the Fine Arts is founded in New York City. The purpose of the academy is to encourage art appreciation and instruct young men in the fine arts. In a classical approach to art education, students are instructed to copy master works.
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
The oldest art school and museum in the nation, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts is established in 1805 by Charles Willson Peale, William Rush, and other artists and patrons. In the early years of its existence, students copy classic works of art. Life classes are offered soon thereafter. An exhibition program for American art begins in 1811.
