INTRODUCTION
Art education during the first 200 years of America consists largely of educating girls in the ornamental arts and boys in drawing and architecture. Apprenticeships continue to play an important role in the development of a trade and most art education is for utilitarian purposes. Painters and sculptors travel abroad for their educations. Formal art training is finally provided for artists in America around the turn of the 19th century when art academies are developed.
