SANCHEZ' CLASS WORKS WITH FAITH RINGGOLD'S TAR BEACH Tar Beach is a story about a girl who imagines that she is in charge of everything by flying over it. She believes she can fly over the George Washington Bridge and then she owns it. She wants a better life for her family. She longs for them to be carefree like the neighbors. The main idea of Tar Beach is that your imagination can take you anywhere. Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach is an excellent book that is available in our library. Mrs. Sanchez' class made some story quilts. That is a painting that is sewn on a bunch of cloth squares that have a story ironed on the border of the quilt. The stories were typed on the computer and had to be perfect. The stories were about something that needed to be changed in our small corner of the world. Pictures of the stories were painted in the center of the quilt piece using acrylic paint. Our exhibit can be seen in the hall outside of Mrs. Sanchez' classroom. Ms. Sanchez's students wrote stories and madesmall quilts about them during the unit.
